Cost Break Down
One thing you have to remember when factoring the cost of a tour to Bhutan is that everything is included in your daily fee/or total price. Let me repeat that – everything is included in your fee. The entire tour, which includes accommodations–a minimum 3-star hotel stay, meals, transportation, a personal guide and driver, the Sustainable Developmental Fee (SDF)– the government fee, and the list goes on– is included. The ONLY cost you may have in Bhutan is the cost of purchasing souvenirs, drinks and tipping.
Depending on the time of year and the activities you choose to participate in will determine the final cost per day. It can range from approximately $300 per day to over $1000. Most tourists who visit Bhutan stay around the $300 (including the SDF fee) per day.
What exactly is the SDF fee and why do you have to pay it? Before September 2023, it cost 200 USD per day to visit Bhutan. However, from September 2023 onwards, the government cut the cost by 50%, making the new Sustainable Development Fee 100 USD. This reduction also applies to children aged 6 to 12, with their daily fee now being 50 USD. The main goal of this initiative is to boost tourism and contribute to the country’s economic growth. The majority of what you pay goes to the government, which then funds education and health care for the Bhutanese people.
The decision to reduce the SDF was not only intended to increase the number of tourists visiting Bhutan but also to increase their duration of stay, which was previously limited by the higher daily fee of 200 USD.
The reduced SDF is also seen as an opportunity to attract tourists of varying backgrounds, those who may not have considered visiting Bhutan, due to its higher fees, compared to other countries. It is important to note that this discounted fee is applicable until 2027, urging potential visitors to seize the opportunity, especially given the dynamic nature of policies.
